About the Leonberger

The Leonberger is a giant working breed developed in the mid-1800s in the German city of Leonberg by Heinrich Essig, who reportedly crossed Saint Bernards, Newfoundlands, and Great Pyrenees to create a majestic dog that resembled the lion on the city’s crest. These gentle giants typically weigh 90 to 170 pounds and are known for their calm, patient temperament and love of family. They excel as therapy dogs, water rescue dogs, and devoted companions.
