About the German Shepherd

The German Shepherd was developed in Germany in the late 1800s by Captain Max von Stephanitz, who envisioned the ideal herding and working dog. He found his ideal specimen at a dog show in 1899 — a dog named Hektor Linksrhein, later renamed Horand von Grafrath, who became the foundation of the breed. Von Stephanitz established the breed standard and the first German Shepherd Dog club, emphasizing utility and intelligence above all else.
